DIY NO SEW Cowboy Costume

So I looked everywhere for a cowboy costume for my almost 2yr old little boy and came up wanting! Either they were black and white cow or 2T that where huge!!!! So I decided to make my own! I went to a local fabric store and the lady there was very helpful and suggested a faux suede would do the trick! I got about 2/3 of a yard and it was plenty! So here is how I did it NO SEW! All you need is a hot glue gun and scissors plus your suede and 1yd of elastic!!!!

 So take your material and cut out a section off one end for your chaps

 Take a pair of your child's jeans and cut out two legs for your chaps and cut out the crotch area if you want the jeans visible when your child is wearing them.

 Now for the fun part, get your hot glue gun ready!!! You are going to hem up the edges of your chaps (all but the outside edges) with your hot glue gun. Put a line of hot glue along the edge of you chaps and fold over press down and let dry.

 This is your hemmed chaps from the back!
 This is what your hemmed chaps look like from the front.

 Now you can fringe your chaps on all the edges that you did not hem, I did the outside edges and the bottom of the belt area.

Take your 1yd of elastic and cut two small strips for the ankle straps

 Hot glue a small dab at each end
 then glue it to the bottom of your chaps
 Do the same thing at the thigh and with the remaining elastic glue it to the inside of  your waist hem

 This is what the back of your chaps should look like after elastic is glued on

 Now time for the vest!!!!
Take on of your child's shirts so it can guide you for cutting neck and arm holes fold your material like it would be a vest on over the shirt and place the shirt on top of the material. You want to material to actually be a little bigger than the shirt.
 cut neck and arm holes in the material
 then cut you neck line
 now for hot glue time! Fold the front down
put a glue line on the shoulder

 then put the front panel onto the glue line and do it again on the opposite shoulder
 I fringed the top of the shoulder just make sure not to cut into the glue
 then you want to hem the middle of the vest
 same way you did all the other hems
 this is the finished hem
 then I fringed the bottom of the vest!

 And now you can add any and all decor you want. I am going to find a sheriffs badge and maybe a little more fringe! But that is it! It fits great and looks great. As of right now I have no pics of my little guy wearing it because I put it on him right after nap and he was having none of the picture taking! But I will post them as soon as I get pics of them on. Here is a tip for putting the chaps on: go ahead and put the chaps on the jeans then put the jeans on your little cowboy!

Puddle Jumper

This is our favorite item this summer!  The Puddle Jumper!

It is approved by the US Coast Guard as a flotation device for kiddos.
My little tot is 16 months and he loves the freedom that this device gives him.
I love it because it does not force him face down in the water.
He  learned very quickly how to lean back and wet his hair and maneuver himself in the water.
He weighs 23 lbs and the wt  on the packaging is 30 lbs.
However I found that it fits him snuggly and it takes mommy power to
get the "armies" off.
The  device clips in the back and is adjustable and fits my little guy just right.
You can find these online at Walmart or Amazon.  Buy Buy Baby in stores.
Of course never allow  your child to be near water unsupervised.
1000 children die each ear from drowning.
Please always have your eyes on your child near water.
Happy and safe swimming!

His Favorite Flavor: Cake Batter Ice Cream

I wanted to share with you a yummy Summer treat!  I recipe for Cold Stone's Cake Batter Ice Cream. {Insert squeal here} My hubs was super excited to try this and the final vote was a perfect match!   I will tell you that you can make this in an electric ice cream maker or just your regular freezer. So go ahead and try it and see what you think.

Cold Stone Slab Cake Batter Ice Cream

Serves: Prep time: 15 min
Cook time: 20 min

  • Yield: 1 quart
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup dry Duncan Hines Butter Recipe Cake Mix
In a heavy stockpot mix together 1 cup of heavy cream, salt, and 3/4 cup of sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. When the sugar is dissolved turn off burner, add 1/2 cup Duncan Hines Butter Recipe cake mix, and whisk in well. Add 2 cups of heavy cream and 1 cup of milk into the pot and mix well.
If you have an electric ice cream maker:
You of course will need ice cream rock salt and ice for your machine. If you place the mixture in your machine now keep in mind that it will take an extra 30-45 min for the mixture to cool to a freezing temp. Consistency will be that of store bought ice cream and will scoop as if your at cold stone.
Making this ice cream with out an electric maker:
 If you wish to make the night before, place in a freezer safe container. I suggest a stainless steel bowl with lid.  Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, remove and whisk mixture well. Then place in freezer overnight. Consistency will be Consistency will be that of store bought ice cream and will scoop as if your at cold stone.

1 Min:

The girl in the mirror may not resemble the girl in your wedding pictures. Her once stylish hair is now kept in a pony tail. She squeezes in the shower when she can. If her baby naps, she may put on a cute outfit. Look at those dark circles under her eyes! And let's not even mention the extra 15 lbs she's carrying.
Reality check: pregnancy, birth, midnight feedings, and parental anxiety don't make us more beautiful; unless we measure beauty differently.
 If you look close at that girl in the mirror, you'll see new laugh lines. She radiates a warmth she never knew before. She is not someone's favorite person in the whole world. Can you accept her?

Psalm 139:1-24

New International Version (NIV)
You have searched me,(A) Lord,
    and you know(B) me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;(C)
    you perceive my thoughts(D) from afar.
You discern my going out(E) and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.(F)
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.(G)
You hem me in(H) behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,(I)
    too lofty(J) for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee(K) from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens,(L) you are there;
    if I make my bed(M) in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,(N)
    your right hand(O) will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark(P) to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being;(Q)
    you knit me together(R) in my mother’s womb.(S)
14 I praise you(T) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,(U)
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made(V) in the secret place,
    when I was woven together(W) in the depths of the earth.(X)
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained(Y) for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a](Z) God!(AA)
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,(AB)
    they would outnumber the grains of sand(AC)
    when I awake,(AD) I am still with you.
19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!(AE)
    Away from me,(AF) you who are bloodthirsty!(AG)
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
    your adversaries(AH) misuse your name.(AI)
21 Do I not hate those(AJ) who hate you, Lord,
    and abhor(AK) those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
    I count them my enemies.(AL)
23 Search me,(AM) God, and know my heart;(AN)
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way(AO) in me,
    and lead me(AP) in the way everlasting.

Pray: My Creator, I live in such an appearance-driven world, and I confess that I spend too much time wishing I looked more beautiful. Please help me to take good care of myself without obsessing over it. Help me to accept myself and see myself as you see me. Continue to pray as the spirit leads you, or just sit quietly in God's presence.

Tot Tuesday: Sunscreen and Sun Safety

We all hear about UVA and UVB exposure-
  UVA is the “black light”, tanning bed.  It promotes tanning but seldom burns the skin.  It effects the dermis and is responsible for the photoaging.
The UVB is what we worry about.  It is the most intense at summer.  It “fries” the epidermis and upper dermis. It causes the sunburn and damages DNA.
A)   Teaching about the damaging effects of the sun is important in any age group; but check out this statistic; Aggressive protection before age 18 may reduce non-melanoma skin cancers by 80%”.  Childhood exposure/sunburns seem to have more of an impact with Basal Cell Carcinomas incidence.  We should focus our biggest teaching about sun protection to our new mothers and young adults.

2)    Sunscreen is Misleading!   The FDA is giving manufactures six months to clean up their acts in false advertisements. It won’t make it for this summer so educate your patients.  They soon will be regulating getting rid of false statements on products. FDA wants “Waterproof,  Sun block,All-Day Protection” and similar slogans removed from sunscreen.

A)   SPF- You really want to pay attention to SPF!  Your SPF number is based on UVB protection, it does not count UVA.   You want your sunscreen to protect you from UVA but if you are outside UVB is what you want!

B)    How much protection?-  Another falsehood!  If SPF 30 is good, well SPF 100 should be even better right?  Nope. Often, people will  grab whatever is the highest and think its best.  It is not true.  If gives people a false sense of security that “I can stay out longer”; and it is simply not the case.  Once again it is that false advertisments that the FDA is getting removed.

C)    DO NOT BUY AEROSAL SUNSCREEN-  They have found it fills the air with tiny particles that are dangerous to inhale.  Carcinogenic!  Only purchase lotion!

D)   How much sunscreen do I put on?-  I don’t know about you but I put a little in my hand and rub it in right?   Wrong again, You should be applying at least 1-2 oz (a shot glass) every 2 hours.  Average adult requires more than 1 oz. for adequate coverage.  EVERY 2 hours AND after sweating and swimming!  Don’t believe your false advertisements.  Can you believe only 1 in 5 people actually put sunscreen on right?

3)     Ingredients in your Sunscreen can cause Cancer !!!-  WHAT?  WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING ON YOUR CHILD? OR YOURSELF?
 PLEASE look at what your buying and rubbing into your skin.  DO NOT BUY  anything with Retinyl palmitate or oxybenzone.  TRY TO PURCHASE products with zinc, titanium dioxide, avabenzone or Mexoryl S.

Important tips:
Avoid sun if you can 10-2p
Look for the worst offenders- Retinyl Palmitate and Oxybenzone
Do not buy sprays or powders-  only lotion
No SPF >50+
Put on sunscreen at least 1oz every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating, there is no real “waterproof, all day protection, sun block”
Eye protection for your children and yourself-  Sun damage is related to macular degeneration and cataracts.   SO BUY YOURSELF SOME UVB STYLISH GLASSES FOR YOURSELF AND THE KIDDOS
